Q&A

Whether you're adding your first plant or planning an entire garden, we're here to help. Here are some of the most common questions we hear about choosing, planting, and caring for perennials and shrubs.

Choosing the Right Plant

How do I know which plants will grow well in my area?

Start with your USDA Hardiness Zone, then consider the amount of sun, soil conditions, moisture, and space available in your garden.

How much sunlight does my garden need?

Most plants will be labeled for full sun, part sun, or shade. Pay attention to how much direct sunlight your planting area receives throughout the day when choosing plants.

How do I know how large a plant will get?

Check the plant's mature height and width before planting. Giving plants enough room to reach their mature size will help keep your garden healthier and reduce the need for frequent pruning.

Planting

When is the best time to plant?

Perennials and shrubs can generally be planted throughout the growing season as long as the ground isn't frozen and conditions are suitable. Spring and fall are often especially good times for planting.

How soon should I plant after my plants arrive?

We recommend unpacking your plants as soon as possible after delivery and following the instructions provided with your order.

Should I water my new plants right away?

Yes. Give newly planted plants a thorough watering to help settle the soil around the roots. Continue watering regularly while they become established.

How often should I water?

Watering needs vary depending on the plant, weather, soil, and time of year. Newly planted plants generally need more consistent moisture than established plants.

Plant Care

Should I fertilize when I plant?

Not always. Many perennials and shrubs don't require fertilizer at planting time. It's best to follow the specific care recommendations for the plant you've purchased.

Do I need to mulch around my plants?

A layer of mulch can help conserve moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and reduce competition from weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant.

What if my plant doesn't look perfect when it arrives?

Plants are living products and may show some stress after shipping. A little wilting, leaf drop, or minor cosmetic damage can be normal after transit. Give your plant time to acclimate, provide appropriate water and light, and follow the care instructions provided.

Seasonal Gardening

Can I plant in the fall?

Absolutely! Fall can be an excellent time to plant many perennials and shrubs. Cooler temperatures and naturally occurring moisture can help plants establish their roots before winter.

Should I cut my perennials back in the fall?

Not necessarily. Some plants benefit from being left standing through winter, providing habitat for wildlife and adding winter interest. Other plants are best cut back in fall or early spring. Check the specific needs of each plant.

Will my perennial come back every year?

Perennials are plants that live for multiple growing seasons, but their hardiness depends on your climate and growing conditions. Always check the plant's recommended hardiness zones before planting.

Ordering & Shipping

Where do you ship?

Hedge & Hollow ships to gardeners throughout much of the United States. Some plants and states are subject to agricultural shipping restrictions. Please see our Shipping page for current delivery areas and restrictions.

How long does it take for my order to ship?

Orders typically leave our farm within 2–4 business days. We generally ship Monday through Wednesday to help minimize the chance of plants sitting in transit over the weekend.

What carrier do you use?

Orders are shipped via FedEx, and tracking information is provided once your order ships.

Is shipping included in the price?

Yes! Shipping is included in the listed price of our plants. Applicable state and local sales tax is calculated at checkout based on your shipping destination.

What size plant will I receive?

The size listed on each product page is the size you'll receive. Because plants are living products, individual plants may vary slightly in height, fullness, or appearance depending on the season and time of shipment.

What should I do when my plants arrive?

Unpack your plants as soon as possible after delivery and follow the care instructions provided with your order. Some temporary stress, such as drooping or minor leaf loss, can be normal after shipping.
