About This Plant
Fine, fountain-like foliage creates a soft, flowing texture that brings a natural woodland feel to the garden. Native to the eastern United States, it thrives in dry shade and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice beneath trees, along woodland paths, or in naturalized plantings where many other plants struggle. Deer resistant and low maintenance, it provides graceful movement and season-long interest with very little care.
Planting & Care
How to Plant
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of direct sun. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and plant at the same depth it was growing, gently loosening the roots. Water deeply after planting and add 2–3 in of mulch, keeping it off the stems. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8.
Watering & Feeding
Water deeply 1–2 times a week for the first season, about 1 in per week. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during heat and dry spells. Rarely needs fertilizer; a layer of compost in spring is plenty.
Pruning & Seasonal Care
Evergreen: don't cut back hard. Comb out or trim tattered leaves in spring. Mulch in late fall to protect roots through the first winter.
