About This Plant
Unlike traditional climbing clematis, this upright, non-vining perennial supports itself with sturdy stems, producing an abundance of rich blue, nodding bell-shaped blooms from early summer into fall. Its long-lasting flowers attract pollinators while adding cottage garden charm to borders and mixed perennial plantings. Easy to grow and winter hardy, it delivers months of color without the need for a trellis.
Planting & Care
How to Plant
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of direct sun. Plant 2–3 in deeper than it sat in the pot to encourage extra shoots. Give it a trellis or support, and shade the roots with mulch or low plants. Water deeply after planting and add 2–3 in of mulch, keeping it off the stems. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
Watering & Feeding
Water deeply 1–2 times a week for the first season, about 1 in per week. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during heat and dry spells. Top-dress with compost in spring; most perennials don't need much fertilizer.
Pruning & Seasonal Care
Pruning depends on the clematis type; check the plant tag. If unsure, trim lightly after flowering. Mulch in late fall to protect roots through the first winter.
