About This Plant
Bring year-round interest to the landscape with Arctic Fire® Red Red Twig Dogwood. This compact deciduous shrub offers something to appreciate in every season, with fresh spring foliage, delicate summer flowers, colorful fall tones, and brilliant red stems that steal the show in winter.
In spring, new green foliage emerges as clusters of small white flowers appear. Summer brings a full, leafy presence along with berries that provide food for birds. As temperatures cool in fall, the foliage develops warm red-purple tones before dropping to reveal the shrub's vibrant stems. In winter, those bare stems become the star of the garden, glowing bright red against snow and the dormant landscape.
Its compact habit makes Arctic Fire® Red an excellent choice for mixed borders, foundation plantings, rain gardens, mass plantings, and anywhere you want dependable seasonal interest.
Planting & Care
How to Plant
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of direct sun. Dig a hole 2–3 times as wide as the pot but no deeper, with the top of the root ball slightly above ground level. Loosen circling roots and backfill with the native soil. Water deeply after planting and add 2–3 in of mulch, keeping it off the stems. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8.
Watering & Feeding
Water deeply 1–2 times a week for the first season, about 1 in per week. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during heat and dry spells. Feed once in early spring with a slow-release shrub fertilizer.
Pruning & Seasonal Care
Blooms in spring: prune right after flowering so you keep next year's buds. Remove dead or damaged branches any time. Mulch in late fall to protect roots through the first winter.
