About This Plant
Regal and richly colored, His Royal Highness is a classic reblooming tall bearded iris with beautifully ruffled blooms in medium purple. The standards rise slightly lighter above deeper purple falls, accented by violet beards tipped with yellow deep in the throat. Its strong, upright form brings elegant height and dramatic color to sunny borders, while its reblooming habit offers a second display later in the season.
Planting & Care
How to Plant
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of direct sun. Plant the rhizome so its top sits right at the soil surface; planting too deep prevents blooms. Needs well-drained soil, and avoid mulching over the rhizome. Water deeply after planting and add 2–3 in of mulch, keeping it off the stems. Hardy in USDA zones 3-10.
Watering & Feeding
Water deeply 1–2 times a week for the first season, about 1 in per week. Once established, it's drought tolerant and only needs water during long dry spells. Top-dress with compost in spring; most perennials don't need much fertilizer.
Pruning & Seasonal Care
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Cut back after a hard frost, or leave stems standing for winter interest and tidy up in spring. Divide every 3–4 years if the center thins. Mulch in late fall to protect roots through the first winter.
