About This Plant
Enjoy a generous harvest of sweet, juicy berries with Joan J Red Raspberry. This productive, thornless variety produces large, firm, deep-red raspberries with excellent flavor, making them delicious for fresh eating, freezing, baking, and homemade jams. Its easy-to-pick canes and extended harvest season make it a wonderful addition to the home edible garden.
Joan J is an everbearing variety that can produce an early summer crop on overwintered canes and another crop on new growth later in the season. Grow it in a sunny berry patch, along a fence, or in a dedicated edible garden for fresh-picked fruit throughout the growing season.
Planting & Care
How to Plant
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of direct sun. Dig a hole 2–3 times as wide as the pot but no deeper, with the top of the root ball slightly above ground level. Loosen circling roots and backfill with the native soil. Water deeply after planting and add 2–3 in of mulch, keeping it off the stems. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8.
Watering & Feeding
Water deeply 1–2 times a week for the first season, about 1 in per week. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during heat and dry spells. Feed in early spring with a fertilizer for fruiting plants.
Pruning & Seasonal Care
Prune in late winter while dormant, removing dead, weak and crossing branches. Mulch in late fall to protect roots through the first winter.
